Middle School Science Wikis
You have several seventh grade science classes collaborating on wikis. Students are divided into groups and are collecting information on each of the kingdoms of living organisms. The wikis are used to present the information, including some slide presentations and graphics your students have created.
Your Monera kingdom group has been doing extremely creative work and has created an impressive presentation on bacteria. The group has received a request by a teacher to use some of their graphics on bacteria cell structure for a project at a school in a nearby state. The students who created the work would get credit for their contribution, and the request is for two graphics out of over a dozen in the presentation.
How do you advise your students?
Speak to the students about the request and ask for their feedback.
Do they want to give out their pictures?
Do they want to receive credit or stay anonymous?
Which pictures are they willing to share?
Contact the teacher who wants to use the student’s graphics and make sure it's a trustworthy request.
Ask the teacher how the graphics would be used.
Ask the teacher how they will cite the photos. Will they use our student's/school's name.
If the use of the picture is appropriate, then contact the students' parents and ask for their feedback. Have parents sign a release/permission for photo to be used.
Contact administration for feedback and approval.
Ask the teacher requesting the pictures to send a media release or a permission form for the parents and students to sign.
Contact the school newspaper editor and the local city newspaper and have them highlight the class' projects with a focus on the groups' project and dynamic graphics.
